DWDM and OTN networks

One of the key advantages of DWDM technology is the use of optical amplifiers that allow you to amplify the entire DWDM range. Thanks to this, it is possible to overcome significant attenuation and losses in optical fibers.

Amplifiers are an integral part of the optical network, offering adjustable gain parameters and various operating modes. Depending on the specifics of the network design, different types of amplifiers are used:

1. EDFA amplifiers (doped with erbium)
2. Raman amplifiers

Once the signal is amplified, DWDM systems are capable of handling applications over ultra-long distances, reaching thousands of kilometers, without the need for signal regenerators.

The OTN (Optical Transport Network) layer has undergone a significant evolution, becoming an integral part of DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) networks.

This integration enables a more efficient connection of traditional SONET/SDH transport with new data services, which is achieved through a common optical layer. As a result, networks can better manage different types of data. This is crucial in the face of increasing demands on throughput and reliability.

GBC Photonics Pluggable Optical Line System (POLS)

The Pluggable Optical Line System (POLS) represents a breakthrough in communication between data centers. Designed to meet the needs of ISPs and cloud hosting companies, POLS offers high-bandwidth optical links that are both compact and easy to deploy and use.

‍ POLS consists of a series of pluggable modules that can be easily installed, replaced or upgraded without the need for a complete system reconfiguration. Each of these modules can perform different functions, such as signal amplification, wavelength conversion, multiplexing (combining multiple signals into one channel), and demultiplexing (separating signals).

POLS systems are available in OSFP and QSFP formats. They support up to 8 wavelengths on a single fiber pair, allowing up to 3.2 Tbps of bidirectional data traffic in the data center over distances of up to 100km when used in conjunction with 400G-ZR/ZR+ coherent optics.

It is an energy-efficient and cost-effective solution, ideal for Internet and cloud service providers requiring minimal configuration with automatic link settings management and laser security.
