How to choose the best types of connections within the data center?

20/2/2023

With the virtualization of life and the increasing amount of data in the cloud, the role of the Data Center continues to grow. Regardless of the size - be it a small room in an office building or a complex of buildings on the outskirts of the city - it is important that the infrastructure is efficient. Its backbone is ICT cabinets, in which devices such as servers, routers, switches, converters are installed, and the bloodstream provides short connections.

Why are short links crucial in the Data Center?

The answer is obvious. A standard IT cabinet (42U) can accommodate 42 devices with a height of 1U. For example, one rack can hold 40 servers, each equipped with 2 ports and 2 switches with 32 ports. How easy it is to count, in this one, exemplary rack cabinet, we have as many as 144 ports to fill! And most of these connections take place within a single closet or a single room.

Depending on the size of the data center, there may be a dozen or dozens of such IT cabinets. This gives us an idea of how many short connections are necessary to allow data to flow. In one DC room, we may need up to several thousand links!
