The entire system can be designed based on passive devices, so that intermediate locations will pull individual transmissions out of the fiber, without the need for power supply.

This is possible through the use of passive devices that add and extract specific wavelengths from the optical fiber. Due to the passive nature of these devices, at intermediate points we need to power only the receiving device, and the failure of a single node does not project the rest of the network.

Using OADM devices (Optical Add Drop Multiplexer) we can create networks with intermediate points that guarantee two-way communication. The devices are 100% passive, so we do not need to have guaranteed power in an intermediate location. The only thing we need to power is the receiver.

• Ring topology on layer one

Transmission systems enable the design of fully passive Ring topologies. Using only one or a pair of fibers we have the ability to bring to each of the intermediate locations an independent transmission, each of which can support a different protocol and bandwidth. Using two-way OADM devices, each of the intermediate locations can communicate with neighboring nodes or with extreme locations.
